Day 4 – Maps and Walking Tour

June 2, 2016 by road13admin

imageGenealogy-wise, the agenda for today was a visit to the map annex of the National Library of Scotland. They have an AMAZING website where you can load historical maps and superimpose them on modern satellite images and see how things have changed over the last, I don’t know…300 years. I downloaded map images for all of the ancestral areas that we will be visiting over the weekend (both Frasers and Campbells). Now we can go see Joseph Fraser’s “Burnside” farm because I know exactly where it is!

I cut out early so I could meet up with Dale; his flight arrived this morning. We are enjoying beautiful weather in Scotland this week, all the locals keep asking us if we brought the weather with us. This can only mean that it will turn cold and rainy during the biking portion of our trip…

This evening we went on a walking tour of Old Edinburgh with the same tour guide we had last night. It was entertaining AND informative. I feel so lucky to have been able to spend this much time in Edinburgh. What a wonderful city.

Tomorrow is another full day at the ScotlandsPeople archive. Dale will get our rental car and the will head toward Aberdeen and the Leslie/Kennthmont area.

Karen: I’m really enjoying your daily reports from Scotland. Edinburgh sounds like an absolutely wonderful city to visit. I’m so excited about some of the records you’ve been able to find. And Alexander and those ancient church elders – just too good! Thinking of you…MaryAnne
