Multiples

March 7, 2021 by karen

This week’s theme is “Multiples.” Any twins in the family? What about triplets? Or maybe you have an ancestor with multiple marriages or multiple jobs?

Let’s go with the first option – twins in the family.

When I was just starting my genealogy research, I interviewed my great-aunt Esther Hanson several times. One thing she mentioned to me was that her grandmother, Nilla Svensdotter, was a twin. I wrote it down but really didn’t give it much more thought.

Here’s how I’m related to Nilla.

It was so cool, though, years later, to find Swedish records that corroborated exactly what Esther said! Nilla had a twin brother, Hans, who sadly died when he was only a month old.

When you think about it, it’s a piece of oral history that has been passed down five generations – a story that Nilla’s parents (my 3x-great-grandparents) would have told her and which came to me through Nilla’s granddaughter.

Following are a couple of the Swedish records showing Nilla and Hans – the first one clearly shows them as tvillingar, the Swedish word for “twins”. Also shown are a few picture that I have of Nilla. Just a year ago, I wrote a blog post about the photo from 1910 with Nilla and all her grandchildren.

(**quick note, I’m behind on replying to comments and on resuming the Road Trip story…I’ll catch up this week, I hope)
