The Saunders County 1907 Atlas

August 26, 2016 by karen

1907PlatBookSaundersI was doing some genealogy work over the lunch hour and stumbled across the 1907 Saunders County Atlas in the Library of Congress – it’s available online and has decent resolution. This is a great resource for genealogists!

I’ve seen the atlas previously in a couple of different online versions.

The highest resolution for (for the map pages only) is available at historicmapworks.com. However, their copies are copyrighted and watermarked. If you wanted to order a print, this would be the place to go.

Rootsweb/USGenWeb has a version with decent resolution graphics, too  – but they have also digitized all the directory pages so you can search for names*.

What I didn’t realize until I looked through the LOC version is that there are several pages in the back of the atlas with photos of residents and even photos of some of their homes. The Rootsweb version has the photos also, AND has they have indexed the names. Refer to their listing here.

I didn’t have time to track down all the relatives, but I did come across my great-great-grandparents Edward and Hulda on page 106, looking pretty spiffy:

Did you notice the website overhaul? It was time to freshen things up a bit.

*By the way, here’s a tip on how to do a site-specific search using Google. On a Google search page, copy-past the text shown below, but edit to substitute whatever name or search phrase you like in the place where I’ve got ‘rudeen’.

This will pull up a list of all the places within that site that contain the search text.
